Effects Pack Gels

The Effects Filter pack contains five each of 6 different colours. It is designed to complement the original filter pack, providing extra colours for effects rather than colour correction.

The following table gives an idea of the colours that can be obtained. The subject, a carved wooden figure about 30cm tall is lit using a cardboard softbox on the left hand side, and a card reflecter on the right. The background is a plain white A1 card about a metre behind the subject. A flash, level with but above the subject is pointed to the plain white card, where the only difference is the gel on the flash, and the flash power setting. For consistency everything was set on manual, with the camera set on flash white balance. The pictures are as they came out of the camera, with a minor levels change and resized for this page.

It's possible to get a fair bit of variety in colour just by adjusting the intensity of the gelled flash, and also by combining two gels on the same flash. Using a snoot or grid you could create a highlighted area. A wide range of backgrounds with a simple white card and a few gels!
